An Integrated Rangeland Fire Management Strategy (IRFMS or “Strategy”) was published by the Department of the Interior in May, 2015. The IRFMS is intended to improve the efficiency and efficacy of actions to address rangeland fire; to enhance the protection, conservation, and restoration of a healthy sagebrush-steppe ecosystem; and to address important public safety, economic, cultural, and social concerns. Essential to the success of the IRFMS is working collaboratively at a landscape scale in an “All hands, All Lands” approach. Another essential element is better employing science and technology among all interested stakeholders – Federal agencies, state, local, and tribal governments, and users of the public lands.
